Dark Sea Series — Butoh Chawan
Handformed chawan created from a blend of iron-rich clays collected over time in Sweden, Germany, and France.
The form itself is inspired and initially shaped from a shell collected in New Caledonia, then transformed through an intuitive process into a functional tea bowl designed specifically for matcha practice.
Part of the Dark Sea series, the piece explores mineral landscapes, butoh movement, erosion, and organic transformation.
The glaze is developed from Swedish diabase stone, creating deep metallic surfaces and volcanic textures through an extended firing process combining gas and charcoal atmospheres.
Beyond its sculptural presence, the bowl has been developed to interact dynamically with matcha — supporting texture, depth, and aromatic expression during preparation.
Each chawan is entirely unique.
Irregularities, asymmetries, and traces of fire are intentionally preserved as part of the living process of the material.
Made slowly in Sweden, where stone, water, silence, and daily practice become part of the work itself.
